Endowments

In addition to its own endowment funds, the foundation holds and manages all endowment pool assets for Arkansas State University and its related entities. The combined market value of the ASU endowment pool at June 30, 2006, was $33.1 million. The University Committee on Joint Investments, a body consisting of representatives from the ASU Foundation, ASU proper, the ASU Alumni Association and the ASU Indian Club, are responsible for developing and approving investment and spending policies. This group is also charged with due diligence responsibilities pertaining to endowment pool money managers.

True endowment funds are designed to exist in perpetuity to provide support for the life of the institution. Consequently, endowment funds are invested with a moderately aggressive long-term focus that employs a diversified portfolio consisting of domestic and international equities, bonds and fixed income vehicles, and alternative assets.

Endowment accounts are subject to an annual spending limit of 4.5 percent of a five-year rolling average market value as measured at the calendar year end. The combination of a long-term investment strategy with limited spending ensures the growth of endowment principal while providing additional funds each year for much needed scholarships, research, faculty development and other academic activities. The minimum amount required to establish an endowment account is $10,000.
